What to Expect During Each Trimester

While a woman is pregnant she will hear the term “trimester” in reference to the stages she will go through in her pregnancy. A trimester is approximately three months. There are three trimesters that comprise the entire pregnancy, which lasts a total of 40 weeks, from the point of conception. As the pregnancy continues, a physician can monitor the growth of the baby during the trimester.

While the baby is growing during the first week, it is called an embryo. This is a key time for the woman to ask her doctor about taking supplements such as folic acid. After week 9 it is known as a fetus. During the first trimester, the baby will start to grow the basic rudimentary forms of the lungs, heart and central nervous system.

Within the second trimester of the pregnancy calendar, the growth of the fetus continues. The second trimester is when a woman should start to feel the baby kicking. Depending on the size of the fetus, it can average around seven inches long. An ultrasound will be able to confirm the exact length and growth of the baby.

The last trimester starts from week 27 to the time the baby is born. The mother should now normally feel the baby kicking. As a result of her hormones and the weight of the baby, she can experience backaches, tiredness and problems sleeping. The baby will continue to grow during this time. Therefore, a baby might experience a growth spurt in preparation for birth, and can average up to 20 inches when born.

Letting Your Kids Express Themselves Freely

Your children need to be allowed a chance to express their individuality and creativity—as long as you let it happen reasonably. Being creative is one of the greatest blessings of being young, and it’s one that far too many parents do not encourage enough. While many parents allow themselves to be limited by the costs of high quality clothes, this is something you should avoid at all costs. Sometimes the best clothes are very reasonably priced.

For instance, Apple Bottom clothes are some of the best you can get. They allow your child to look urban and chic without putting on a “gangster” look that seems like they probably just robbed a convenience store. Your kids need to be able to wear clothes that are comfortable enough to be worn just about anywhere, but stylish enough that they can feel good about themselves. This is the essence of free personal expression. While far too many parents think that this expression has to come at a substantial cost, this isn’t the case at all.

For one thing, there are sales just about everywhere you can buy clothes. You just have to time your shopping trip properly to find the best deals on the most interesting examples of personal style. Also, allow your kids to select their own clothes as much as possible. While there are bound to be some times when your kids shouldn’t get too wild—such as if your son wants to have giant red spikes and wear a dress—self-expression is great most of the time. While going too wild is bad, kids need to express themselves.

How to Help Your Child Win a Costume Contest

Competition can be fun, especially when it involves helping your child find a Halloween costume. Children’s costumes are fun to make, getting as creative as you can, and having fun with your kids in the process. If your son or daughter is interested in entering into a costume contest this Halloween, there are some basics that can help them.

The first is originality. Whether you purchase children’s costumes and customize them, or create them from scratch, the key to winning is thinking outside the box, and creating something a little different. Judges of any contest love this.

Elaborate costumes can still be original, especially if you customize to fit your personality. Your child can pull it off, that is for certain. Children enjoy being in the lime light, and should be able to wear a costume with confidence. They should feel good about the costume they are wearing. Chances are, a judge is going to look passed the child who is throwing a tantrum or is less than excited to be participating.

Explore your imagination this Halloween to procure a costume that fits your child’s personality, is comfortable and engaging, ensures ease of use, and calls the attention of the judges. Be original, and have fun with the costume. You can certainly find costumes that are original in packaged form. You can also get ideas from costumes and run with them to make your own.

Comparing Cell Phone Plans for Families

In today’s digital world, families are very aware of the advantages of cell phones and great phone plans that can fit perfectly for the family as well as each individual. Because there are so many plans available, it is smart to figure out what you want and need in your personal family plan before making a final decision.

When comparing family phone plans, some things to consider are:

Needs

What exactly do you want your cell phones for? Is your goal to keep in touch with each other? Is it cell phones for personal use and socializing? Since most plans divide minutes between everyone in the family, it is important to ascertain exact needs before going any further.

Perks and Features

If one family member wants a BlackBerry smart phone and another wants a cell for emergency calls only, then these differences need to be settled before choosing a plan. Also, make sure what a family plan really means in your plan of choice, as all plans are not created equal. Is the plan for people who are actually related or people living under the same roof?

Budget

Budget constraints are a prime factor in the plan you choose; look carefully at all financial aspects. Is a contract required? For how long? Does a plan seem inexpensive but the total minutes are actually too low for adequate use? If you choose a plan with low minutes and continually go over the amount, it can end up costing you a lot more than a better plan.

And, with wise planning, the whole family might be able to get a blackberry smart phone, so plan, plan, plan!

Picking the Perfect Pediatrician

Finding the best pediatrician for your new baby can be a daunting task. When family and friends suggest their favorites, make a list of potential pediatricians and narrow it down to at least two. There’s no substitute for visiting the office personally and interviewing the pediatrician to learn more about his or her practice and philosophy. Keep in mind that you are the one hiring this person to care for your child.

Show up to the interview with specific questions. Make sure you’ve written these out ahead of time and come prepared to take notes. Some of the questions you may ask are:

  • Which hospital is the pediatrician associated with?
  • Do their office hours suit your schedule? Some parents require a doctor who has weekend availability.
  • Does the doctor correspond via email?
  • How would you reach the doctor after hours?
  • Does the office accept your insurance? Are their additional fees for advice calls, medication refills or any other services? Research using search engines like Canada 411 for current or previous patient reviews.
  • Are their separate well-baby and sick-children waiting areas?
  • What tests will the office staff perform on site and which ones need to be handled elsewhere?

You want to find out how involved the pediatrician will be on discussing your child’s growth, social development and discipline issues. Some spend more time on these discussions than others. Also, ask his or her views on breast-feeding, circumcision, alternative medicine and immunizations.

Being honest with yourself is also important. Did you feel comfortable speaking with the pediatrician? Was the staff helpful and the office clean? If they don’t live up to your expectations, change doctors.

Adopting a Service Dog

Service dogs are exactly what their name implies. They are dogs that have been trained to provide a specific service. For example, service dogs can be trained as guide dogs for blind people or even be taught to perform assistance tasks for people who have physical disabilities.

Best Breed for Service Dogs

Labrador and golden retrievers are usually chosen as service dogs because they are very smart and extremely easy to train. Further, Labrador and golden retrievers generally have a steady temperament and are very affectionate. You search Canada 411 to find more information on this specific dog breed.

Labrador and golden retrievers also thrive on being active; therefore, they don’t mind working in a situation where they are constantly on the move. This can actually be beneficial to the person using the service dog because the dog’s eagerness to go for walks and perform other physical activity can motivate the person to stay active.

Adopting Service Dogs

Puppies that are to be trained as service dogs are sometimes “fostered out” to families so that they can learn socialization skills as well as the basic commands they will need to know before they start their service dog training. The families understand that they will not fully adopt the puppy. Rather, the puppy will be taken back by the handler to finish his training, and will eventually be adopted by someone needing a service dog. The providers make sure that the person and the dog are very compatible.

Forming a Positive Relationship with Your Child

Children and parents can have a positive relationship when there is clear communication and trust between them. This starts with daily interactions at home.

When interacting with children, parents need to keep an open channel of communication and an atmosphere of trust. Children are more likely to communicate with parents when they feel that they will be listed to without anger. Parents should take a child’s point of view of a particular situation into consideration without jumping to conclusions too quickly. There should also be honesty about feeling when it comes to behavior and choices that are made.

Children should be taught to tell parents honestly how they feel and parents should do likewise. This helps to keep children from bottling up emotions that can later come out when not expressed. You can create a positive relationship by spending time with your child. Set up a family night each week where you and your child can interact without the television or other distractions to get in the way.

Do something that you both enjoy, eat a meal together and make it a relaxing atmosphere. This helps to reinforce to the child that he is loved, accepted and important within the family structure. This night should be set where everyone can be involved and when it does not conflict with a parent’s work schedule. The benefits you will see from this small activity will be huge. You can also help your relationship by asking your child to help with family responsibilities such as the budget, planning a vacation or with household responsibilities.
